In 1996 the City of Augusta consolidated with Richmond County to form Augusta-Richmond County. Augusta is Georgia's second oldest, second largest city and is located about 150 miles east of Atlanta. Along with several other Georgia and South Carolina counties, the region is known as the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).
Augusta is perhaps best known as home of the Masters Golf Tournament held the first full week in April. The area offers many other events to include the Arts in the Heart Festival, Westobou Festival and Augusta's Greek & Hispanic Festivals. First Fridays are a monthly downtown event with live music and art exhibitions. Augusta Riverwalk is located directly on the banks of the Savannah River and hosts 4th of July Fireworks, St. Patrick's Day celebrations, and more. From March through November, the Augusta Market brings local farmers and artisans to the Riverwalk each Saturday morning.
There are opportunities for outdoor recreation throughout the county. Augusta Canal offers outdoor experiences with trails, kayak and canoe access, and picnic areas. Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is a 1,100-acre nature park with wetlands and woodlands and has a campus for water research and environmental education.
The area is also a center for education. Augusta University is a public research university with three distinct campuses. The historic Summerville campus is home to the university's liberal arts programs of study. The Health Sciences campus is home to the Medical College of Georgia and Dental College of Georgia. The medical community is thriving in Augusta with multiple hospitals and the state's only public academic medical center.
Fort Gordon is a large, multi-mission, multi-service military installation located in Richmond County. Fort Gordon is home to the Signal Corps and Cyber Center of Excellence and performs communications training, military intelligence, cyber operations.
Some of the largest employers in the county are: U.S. Army Signal Center & Ft. Gordon, Medical College of Georgia, Richmond County School System, University Hospital, VA Medical Center, E-Z-GO Textron, International Paper, Club Car, Procter & Gamble, John Deere, Solvay Polymers, and DSM Chemical.
